In the viral video, Bryan Acheampong was on his knees surrounded by some clergy members as they offered prayers for him.

Shortly after the prayers, he officially declared his intention.

He revealed that his decision is influenced by an exploratory team he set up, which spent a month assessing the sentiments of NPP delegates.

Speaking to the media, on Tuesday, June 24, Dr. Acheampong stated, “…A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations, but to do that, as a product of the church, it will be a disappointment per my tradition, if the moderator of the church hears it for the first time on the radio.

“So, before the formal announcement is made, I thought it wise to inform the general council and the moderator of the presby church. Most importantly, I am here to also seek the blessings of God.”

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president and presidential candidate for the NPP in the 2024 election, is the preferred candidate for the majority of the NPP supporters.

A survey conducted by the Africa Policy Lens Survey revealed that 70.6% of NPP members preferred Dr Bawumia ahead of the NPP presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.

The recent analysis by Africa Policy Lens unveiled significant insights regarding the preferences of supporters within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and their views on potential flagbearers for the next general elections in 2028.

The report indicates that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia remains the frontrunner among NPP supporters for the party’s presidential candidacy in 2028.

Africa Policy Lens Survey is quoted by GHONE TV to have stated, “70.6% of NPP members prefer Bawumia as presidential candidate”.
