President John Dramani Mahama has told all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to declare their assets by July 15, 2025.
John Mahama further revealed that MMDCEs may soon be replaced by a more democratic system.
According to John Mahama, the major proposal emerging from the ongoing constitutional review is for the MMDCEs to be elected directly by the people.
He further asserted that MMDCEs will receive unprecedented levels of financial resources in the history of the Fourth Republic.
Speaking during the orientation and training programme organised for MMDCEs on Wednesday, June 18, John Mahama stated, “In the meantime, I wish to remind you that you are among the office holders who are required to declare your assets, and so I expect that by July 15th, all of you will have declared your assets.”
“MMDCEs, you may be the last batch of MMDCEs appointed. The National Review committee is going round and will present its recommendations in August this year, and one of the major items that has come up is the election of the MMDCEs.
There is no doubt that Ghanaians want the MMDCEs elected. Those who succeed you might have to go through elections,” he remarked.
He further added, “We have taken steps to transfer the highest amount of funds in the history of the Fourth Republic to you from the District Assemblies Common Fund, 80% of the DACF is coming directly to you.
“We expect you to ensure the judicious and transparent use of these resources. The funds must be utilised in the interest of our people and not for our social contract,” he further noted.
