Alhaji Abass Imoro the Public relations officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has tackled the John Mahama-led government GH₵1 dumsor levy.
According to the GPRTU, if the government are saying they will take 1 cedi for a litre that is not a small money.
He noted that the government has not been clear with its explanation of the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill 2025 introducing a GH¢1 increase in the levy on petroleum products.
Speaking on Citi TV, Alhaji Abass Imoro stated, “We are not clear with their explanation, because if you are going to take 1 cedi on a litre, that is not small money.
“We just reduced our lorry fares with some understanding, thinking the appreciation of the cedi and fuel reductions would bring relief, only to wake up the next day to hear of another tax,” he said.
“We are yet to get a clear explanation on that. This affects professional drivers more, and we believe we should have been part of the conversation. One cedi per litre means a lot.
“Whenever fuel prices are reduced, we get breathing space. This is something we cannot take lightly,” Mr Imoro added.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has stated the energy sector levy won’t increase fuel prices.
John Mahama revealed that the ₵1 ‘dumsor levy’ was a difficult but necessary decision.
He asserted that the ₵1 energy sector levy won’t result in an increase in fuel prices.
According to John Mahama, Ghana must take advantage of recent gains created by appreciation in the value to accelerate solutions to our energy sector challenges.
Speaking at the Jubilee House on Tuesday during the presentation of the final report of the National Economic Dialogue 2025, John Mahama stated, “This was not a decision we took lightly. Though difficult, it is necessary and justifiable.”
He added, “ We must take advantage of recent gains created by appreciation in the value of our currency to accelerate the solution to our energy sector challenges”.
