The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs.
According to the PURC, the Electricity tariff increase takes effect on July 1, 2025, across all customer categories.
The adjustment will apply to residential, non-residential, and special load tariff (SLT) customers.
The PURC asserted that the upward review is necessary to sustain utility service providers and ensure a reliable electricity supply.
“The Commission has carefully analysed the existing parameters and, considering the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians, has approved a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs across the board and 0% increment in water tariffs,” the statement noted.
However, the PURC has confirmed that water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter of 2025.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the PURC adjustment, saying, “We were told ECG buys power in dollars and distributes to us in cedis…. with the cedi appreciation why aren’t tarrifs reducing but rather increasing?”.
“This was an agreement the previous government signed. It shouldn’t be like the new government is the one increasing tariffs. Tariffs are increased by the PURC, and this agreement was made in 2024”, another stated.
“On the real, our President is really trying but offlate, our meters run very fast, idk if i’m the only one in this but who’s responsible for that tho, what’s the energy minister doing atp”,one netizen added.
“NPP still doing wonders even in opposition…the deals these guys went into before leaving power will linger for years to come!!!”, one more user stated.
