Private legal practitioner and social activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has waded into the Chief Justice Getrude Torkornoo’s media briefing yesterday, 25 June 2025.
According to Oliver Vormawor, the Chief Justice has no belief in the Judiciary over which she presides, but still wants to keep presiding over it.
In a post on his social media page on X, the lawyer and social activist stated, “ The Chief Justice has no belief in the Judiciary over which she presides?
But she wants to keep presiding over it?”.
Vormawor’s comments come on the heels of Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo stating that her removal process breaks every rule on how justice is delivered.
Speaking to the media on 25 June, 2025, Torkornoo stated, “The first reason is that the removal process that I am involved in as Chief Justice is historic. In all of Ghana’s 68-year history as an independent republic, there has never been a hearing for the removal of the Chief Justice.
One would therefore have hoped that if such a process becomes necessary, it would provide good guidance and precedent for nation-building. Unfortunately, every step of the removal process being undertaken against me is being done in a manner that breaks every rule on how justice is delivered in the country.
And this is why I find the need to draw the nation’s attention this afternoon, to the serious violations of the Constitution and law in the process, and the danger it holds for the development of the nation’s democracy”.
She added, “Let me assure everybody that I do not seek to cling to a title or position. However, as a lawyer of 38 years standing, a Judge of 21 years standing, and Chief Justice of Ghana who has served in the rule of law all of my working life, I consider it my onerous duty and obligation to speak up concerning the administration of justice in this country.
The situation I have been confronted with has shown me a model of injustice that I would never have thought possible if I had not been exposed to it. This is why despite great personal discomfort, I have decided to marshal every effort, in law and leadership, to answer to this situation.
Furthermore, resigning or retiring while Article 146 proceedings are being conducted to remove a Judge is not an option any Judge or public official is even allowed to have. There is a decided case on the subject by the Supreme Court. The suit number is J6/02/2019”.
Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, has stated that there is no political agenda exists to oust Chief Justice Torkornoo.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, June 25, the Government Spokesperson stated, “Let me place on record without fear of contradiction, and let me be clear that no political agenda exists to oust her [Gertrude Torkornoo]”
He added, “The Chief Justice, more than anybody else, perhaps in this country, should be aware of the platform that is available to address such threats.
If today, someone sends you a threat, you know where to go to seek redress in the matter, and that is what I will say about it,” he said.
