Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president and presidential candidate for the NPP in the 2024 election, is the preferred candidate for the majority of the NPP supporters.
A survey conducted by the Africa Policy Lens Survey revealed that 70.6% of NPP members preferred Dr Bawumia ahead of the NPP presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.
The recent analysis by Africa Policy Lens unveiled significant insights regarding the preferences of supporters within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and their views on potential flagbearers for the next general elections in 2028.
The report indicates that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia remains the frontrunner among NPP supporters for the party’s presidential candidacy in 2028.
Africa Policy Lens Survey is quoted by GHONE TV to have stated, “70.6% of NPP members prefer Bawumia as presidential candidate”.
Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has made a bold declaration that President John Mahama would hand over power to him in January 2029.
Speaking during an open interaction with MMDCEs in Accra, Dr Bawumia stated, “Every president has handed over power to someone they contested. President Rawlings handed over power to Kufuor, they contested in 1996, isn’t it? President Kufuor handed over power to who? Atta Mills”.
“They contested again in 2000 and 2004, isn’t it? And then Atta Mills unfortunately passed away and gave it to John Mahama in terms of him being elected.
But the Mills-Mahama government handed over power to who? Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, whom Mahama had contested.
And Nana Akufo-Addo has also handed over power to who? To John Mahama, whom he contested.
“So now, who is John Mahama going to hand over power to? That is it. It’s clear. It’s clear.
John Mahama will hand over power to Dr Mahamudu. That is what is being done.”, he boldly stated.
