Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, is set to meet the Kusang Traditional Council today, Monday, 30th June 2025, as part of the mediation efforts between the two factions involved in the ongoing Bawku conflict.
In a press statement issued on June 29, 2025 from the Manhyia Palace stated, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, will meet the Kusang Traditional Council on Monday, 30th June, 2025.
Asantehene requests all stakeholders to cooperate for us to find a lasting peace in Bawku”, the statement added.
There has been an escalation of violence following the resurgence of a long-standing chieftaincy conflict, sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.
Abagre fled Bawku after an arrest warrant was issued against him following his contested installation as chief in Nalerigu. A High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, nullified the warrant, allowing him to resurface.
There have been several casualties, including the killing of children and families in the ongoing conflict in Bawku and along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.
Despite intensified efforts by security forces to quell the unrest and safeguard commuters, armed assailants continue to unleash deadly attacks, deepening fear and uncertainty among residents and travellers in the region.
President Mahama, at the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy some months ago, revealed that the Otumfuo has assured him the mediation process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad.
