Prof Mike Oquaye, the former Speaker of Parliament, has called on NPP members to excuse any member who works against the interest of the party.
According to Prof Mike Oquaye, some party flagbearer hopefuls are creating disunity in the party through their campaigns.
Speaking at the launch of the NPP’s Patriotic Institute in Accra some days ago, Prof Oquaye stated, “Anybody who works against the interest of the party, must be excused. Any man or woman, now or forever, who works against the established principle, will not be doing us any good”.
“If we should do that, this party will be successful,” Prof Oquaye added.
Prof Mike Oquaye added, “I want to remind you about the cost of disunity. Our party, the year 1979, when we had the elections that brought Liman of the PNP to power, was divided into PFP and UMC.”
“I wrote a book on this. You only have to know JSS arithmetic and put the figures together, and you would realise that the election was cool chop for the Dankwa Busia tradition, but we decided to fight among ourselves and we lost the election,” he recalled.
Meanwhile, at the same event, John Agyekum Kufuor, the former President, also warned the members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the party will go out of operation if members do not stop the tribal and religious bigotry.
According to Kufuor, the NPP must stop religious and tribal sentiments as the party prepares to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at the launch of the party’s new think tank, the Patriotic Institute, on Wednesday, June 25, Kufuor stated, “We are democratic and we uphold common humanity. Democracy doesn’t go in for tribe, religion and gender.”
“…if we want power, we want to present a person who will be convincing to the generality of the electorate. Can this man we are presenting help solve problems for the community at large, so the benefit spreads across the board for all?” the former President added.
He further added, “We may see that the way we have been brushed by our opponents from way back; oh, you’re a tribal party. These days, we are even including religion. You do that and it comes from our mouths, then I tell you we are perpetuating it”.
“How come our fortunes have been dwindling since 2016, 2020, and now our current state?” Ex President Kufuor asked.
