Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has revealed that the Mahama-led government would recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in the 2025 calendar year.
The sector minister asserted that the move is to strengthen the education sector.
According to Haruna Iddrisu, adequate provisions have been made in the 2025 national budget to support the mass recruitment.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the sector minister stated, “This morning, I met with Bafour Eric, and I will soon share the details with the public. We discussed the matter, and he indicated to me that clearance was received in May. They were expected to start work in August but began in September.
“Naturally, by December 31, the clearance issued by the Finance Ministry had expired, and they can only proceed with a renewed clearance, which is what I am currently awaiting. Let them be assured.
“Mr. Speaker, as I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” he said.
Haruna Iddrisu’s comment came on the back of Afenyo-Markin calling for an investigation into the alleged jostling of teachers who recently picketed at the Ghana Education Service (GES) premises.
Meanwhile, Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that efforts are underway to resolve concerns raised by newly posted teachers who picketed on Monday, June 23, over delays in salary payments and staff ID issuance..
According to the GES, the Ministry of Education has requested an extension of the expired financial clearance from the Finance Ministry.
In a related development, the aggrieved teachers have suspended their picketing after GES following assurances from the Ghana Education Service (GES) that their outstanding salaries will be paid by the end of July.
