The $200,000 Effiakuma AstroTurf built in the Effiakuma Constituency has been turned into a swimming pool after heavy rains.
According to reports, the artificial pitch in Effiakuma was submerged in water after hours of rainfall in Takoradi.
In the viral video spotted on Facebook, residents, mostly children and teenagers, were seen swimming in the pitch-turned-pool.
The information gathered suggests Construction of the facility officially began in 2018 and reportedly cost $200,000.
Then Member of Parliament for the Effia Constituency, Joseph Cudjoe stated, “The reason for the plethora of recreational facilities in Effia is to use them as a vehicle through which football talents develop. These parks are where the awakening of the national teams that we want will begin. Many of such astro turfs will be built all over Effia”.
According to David Tetteh an academy coach at Sedan FC the facility has had drainage issues for some time.
He revealed, “This was not the first time we have seen it flood. Usually, after a few hours of rain, the surface area gets filled with rainwater.
This time, it rained for a while so I am not surprised that the entire playing surface was submerged in water”.
