According to Fatimatu Abubakar, would President John Mahama be happy if he is impeached over his wife’s Lordina Mahama state trips?

She revealed that in Ghana everyone knows that the  President’s spouse uses state funds to purchase flight tickets for their travels as the suspended Chief Justice is also being accused of doing for her husband and children.

Speaking in an interview on Movement TV, Fatimatu Abubakar quizzed, “President Mahama, if what he is doing is done to him, would he be happy? Or we sit in this country and pretend we don’t know that the President’s spouse uses state funds to purchase flight tickets for her travels?”

“I am saying this based on the fact that the Chief Justice is not an administrative officer for the Executive. The Chief Justice is the head of the Judiciary, and all judicial power is vested in the Judiciary, as stated in Article 125(3) of the Constitution”, she added.

She further added, “Today, I ask: should someone file impeachment proceedings against the president because the First Lady, whom we have neither voted for nor appointed to any official position, is using state funds to purchase flight tickets for her travels?

Yet, when this happens, it is only the young NDC members who raise concerns about her flying business class”.

Her comments followed President Mahama suspending the Chief Justice following a prima facie case being determined against her by the Council of State.

The President established a committee in compliance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State with the following composition to inquire into the petitions which have been referred to them”.

Meanwhile, two renowned lawyers affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Tsatsu Tsikata, and Thadeus Sory and Lawyer and activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor are representing the petitioners in the suspended Chief Justice Torkonoo probe.

The probe commenced on Thursday, 15 May 2025, 24 days after the Chief Justice was suspended from office pending the investigations.

According to reports, at the Committee’s first in-camera sitting, Tsatsu Tsikata and Thadeus Sory proclaimed themselves as lawyers for Shining Stars of Ghana, one of the three petitioners.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor appeared for Daniel Ofori, also a petitioner with Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo, a lawyer and petitioner, representing himself.
