The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has spent the night in the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after failing to meet his bail conditions.

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, however, his legal team on Wednesday had not fully satisfied the conditions required to secure his release.

Wontumi is under investigation by EOCO over alleged financial transactions involving the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.

Chairman Wontumi has been exposed for allegedly receiving $12m from EXIM bank.

Alex Kwaku Tetteh the president of Citizen Eye Ghana, a pressure group has revealed that he knows for a record Chairman Wontumi received $12 million from EXIM bank.

Speaking to the media, Wontumi’s lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi stated, “We are confident that by Thursday, May 29, all necessary requirements will be fulfilled”.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO following a visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Tuesday, May 27 shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.

EOCO has yet to issue an official statement on the Wontumi’s arrest.

The detailed nature of the investigations remains undisclosed, however, Wontumi’s legal team revealing that his client has been served a writ of summons by Exim Bank adding to his legal challenges.

The Exim Bank writ of summons follows Wontumi’s interrogation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Speaking to the media he stated, “Nevertheless, we have also received this afternoon a writ of summons from Exim Bank, and we are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow. I am very hopeful that we will be able to mount a defence to the writ”.

“When we are in court, we will indicate to the court that this is a civil matter, for which reason Exim Bank has issued a writ to us, which we are also responding to. So, this one of a supposed criminal investigation, I am sure and confident that we will be able to mount a defence,” Appiah-Kubi added.
