Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo constituency, Hon Vincent Ekow Assafuah quizzed what stopped the vice president Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman from using a first-class or a business ticket for her return to the country.
Vincent Ekow Assafuah accused the presidency of causing a purported financial loss to the state, by chartering a private jet for the vice president from London to Accra.
According to the lawmaker, Ghanaians are being told the government does not have enough money to purchase fuel to take care of our energy sector but the government is chartering a private jet.
Speaking on Channel One TV, Vincent Ekow Assafuah stated, “If indeed the presidential jet has been grounded from London to Ghana is about six hours what stops the vice president from who is now looking twenty years younger from using a first-class ticket which is just about 100,000 cedis or a business class ticket which is just about 50 to 60,000 cedis rather than chartering a private jet costing the state not less than GH¢2 Million old money 20 billion.
The government and the vice president could have saved this country about 1.9 million cedis”.
He added, “Today in Spintex and environs almost every 12 hours there are lights out, if you go to Kumasi every eight hours there are lights out in some parts of Kumasi, we are being told we do not have enough money to purchase fuel we have about three days quantum of fuel to take care of our energy sector and if there has been an opportunity to save this country about 1.9 million from a single trip.
By their own standard, they would have used that opportunity to save this country money. The Defence minister should prepare to be hauled before parliament to answer why or whether or not the presidential jet has been grounded. To answer if indeed it is Akufo-Addo who grounded the presidential jet.
As far as I was aware within the last three months the current president has been using the presidential jet. I will also want to find out from the defence minister how much it indeed costs the state to charter this Vista jet from London to Ghana”, he concluded.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah accusing the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of mismanaging the country’s official presidential jet, the Falcon, to the point of causing significant damage, including corrosion of the aircraft’s fuel tank.
Edward Omane Boamah in a post on Facebook wrote, “Let the NPP that suffered the most humiliating defeat in recent memory in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections know this: Akufo-Addo’s administration rundown the Presidential jet. Among others, its fuel tank is even corroded”.
“The Presidential jet has been in the ‘hospital’ abroad for maintenance, repair and overhaul and may be put in fairly usable state after three months of ‘therapy’. The Presidential jet is unfit for use presently,” he added.
