A video has surfaced of a two-storey building being destroyed in the ongoing demolition exercise.
The viral video shared on social media captured day two of the demolishing of illegal structures led by the Accra Regional Coordinating Council at the Lashibi Ramsar Site.
An excavator was spotted destroying the two-storey building.
On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo with the Tema Mayor and a special task force demolished structures erected on the Sakumo Ramsar Site.
The demolition follows President John Mahama’s directive to remove illegal developments that have encroached on protected wetlands designated as ecologically sensitive.
According to the authorities, the demolition exercise was necessary, non-negotiable, and critical to preserving the integrity of the Ramsar site for environmental sustainability.
However, McDonald Owusu a property developer was captured on his knees begging the Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akwetey Ocloo and other officials not to demolish his property.
In the viral video, McDonald Owusu was captured on his knees pleading for his project to be spared during the demolition exercise at the Sakumo Ramsar site.
He attempted to obstruct the demolition but was escorted away by security personnel at the scene.
Some Ghanaians have reacted to the video by saying, “By doing this, they should also invite the government officials as well as the site planners to answer certain questions. How can they sell the Ramsar site to people when they know such areas are not favourable to build?”.
Another stated, “Oh 😪😪 This is heartbreaking watching billions go down the drain but it’s a necessary exercise mmm. Guys use this as an advice oo don’t go buy land anyhow at anywhere. Sorry for the loss😪”.
One more user stated, “This is so painful to watch. If you have ever bought cement before, you’ll understand the pain the owner of this building will go through”.
