A viral video has surfaced of a lady reporting an altercation between passengers and a Trotro driver at Circle, Accra after the driver of a vehicle they boarded returned them midway back to Circle.
This followed a disagreement over the driver’s refusal to reduce transport fares by 15% as directed by transport unions.
A lady who recorded the video stated, “I am in Circle right now, the car loaded and it back to the station because we refused to pay the actual money he demanded.
The government said 15 per cent he is saying he is not going to take that 15 per cent from the money, we were on our way, and he has brought us back to the station that we should get down.”
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has also warned transport stations and branches they will be sanctioned if they do not comply with the 15% fare reduction.
According to Godfred Abulbire, the General Secretary of GPRTU some operators in the Ashanti Region had cited late communication as a reason for delay in adjusting fares.
Speaking on Channel One TV, Godfred Abulbire stated, “The chairman has forwarded another press release and made it known that by tomorrow if stations or branches working under us don’t comply with the directives, sanctions will be meted out to those terminals”.
“A particular punishment drivers do not like is to seize him or stop him from loading. So we think that is what we need to do,” he added.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro has advised passengers not to assault drivers or their mates if they refuse to implement the 15% fare reduction on Saturday 24th May 2025.
According to Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, passengers should rather report drivers and mates who fail to comply with the 15 per cent reduction of transport fare to the police instead.
The GPRTU PRO is quoted to have said, “ Don’t beat drivers or mates if they refuse to reduce fares by 15 per cent on Saturday; report them to the Police instead”.
However, some transport operators in Tamale are yet to fully comply with the directive by GPRTU to reduce transport fares by 15%
According to reports, some stations have only reduced by 10% with others defying the directive by insisting they will reduce on Monday, citing late notice.
