On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo with the Tema Mayor and a special task force demolished structures erected on the Sakumo Ramsar Site.

The demolition follows President John Mahama’s directive to remove illegal developments that have encroached on protected wetlands designated as ecologically sensitive.

According to the authorities, the demolition exercise was necessary, non-negotiable, and critical to preserving the integrity of the Ramsar site for environmental sustainability.

Meanwhile, Dr Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, the Director General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has also refuted claims that the ongoing demolition exercise at the Sakumo Ramsar site was poorly coordinated.

Speaking on Channel One TV he stated, “I don’t think the exercise lacked [coordination]. For me, the beginning of work was very satisfactory”.

“Everybody played their parts and what we gave ourselves as targets for work today we’ve accomplished, and work will continue [on Wednesday] unabated,” he assured.

Some Ghanaians have reacted to the video saying, “You build where you are not supposed to.  You create a potential hazard for others.  But you beg to be allowed to put the lives of others in danger.  I am sorry but I don’t and will never understand this mentality”.

“Am sure he knew it was a no go area but someone assured him he’s has no problem building there… Unfortunately too they can’t prove it 😭.. Sorry for them.. God’s strength”, another added.

One more X user wrote, “This actually sends a clear message that before paying for land, you need to conduct thorough checks to avoid such issues. Very sad, but it’s too late for recourse”.
