A video has surfaced of the minority leader Alexander Afenyo Markin punching a police officer at the Save the Judiciary demonstration by the NPP and other political parties.
In the viral video, Afenyo Markin and some other protestors were captured trying to break through a police barricade when the minority leader hit the police and called him a fool for preventing them from breaking through the barricade.
According to reports, tempers flared when Afenyo Markin was nearly denied entry into the Fore Court of the Parliament House for the presentation of a second petition to the Speaker.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) together with some political parties are staging a demonstration today, Monday, May 5 against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.
The NPP are walking through the principal streets of Accra together with the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others.
According to the NPP, the National Democratic Congress’s attempt to remove the Chief Justice is calculated and dangerous interference in the judiciary.
The NPP’s planned demo comes on the back of President John Dramani Mahama suspending Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo following a prima facie case being determined against her by the Council of State.
The President consequently, established a committee in compliance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State with the following composition to inquire into the petitions which have been referred to them.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the video by saying, IGP Yohonu and @GhPoliceService if he doesn’t also sleep in jail for two weeks then you aren’t up to the task. Last year we demonstrated against galamsey and the kingpin of galamsey ordered the police for our arrest and put to sells for two weeks under the auspices of CJ Torkonoo”.
Another wrote, “NPP in power: National security operatives slapped an MP. NDC in power: MP slaps a police officer. Big difference”.
“Like I be that police officer, like the fans I go chop no be small. “Police officer commot minority leader ein tooth” go be the headline”, a netizen also stated.
Additionally, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has stated the judiciary is Ghana’s last hope as the Council of State has failed Ghanaians.
He noted that the Judiciary must unite to defend their institution as the suspension of the Chief Justice undermines our democracy.
According to Afenyo Markin, the Council of State has failed Ghanaians and is urging the judiciary to put aside their differences and know the institution is under attack.
