Dr Ken Ashigbey, the Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey has warned President John Dramani Mahama that the window to fight the illegal mining commonly known as galamsey is closing.
According to him, if the John Mahama administration does not deal with the galamsey menace in the first two years and the NDC starts fighting for the next flagbearer the galamsey fight will be lost.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, Dr Ken Ashigbey stated, “The window to fight galamsey is closing fast. If we don’t deal with it in the first two years, and the NDC starts clamouring for his [President’s] seat because the next election is going to come, it will be a lost battle”.
“We need to call on all professional bodies to join the media, the way we’ve been doing this thing, to ensure that we bring the necessary pressure—commending the President where it is right and where they also falling short, we point it out to them,” Ing. Ashigbey added.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has stated he did not kid himself into thinking he could win the galamsey fight in just four months.
John Mahama noted the fight against illegal mining commonly known as galamsey is a complex one.
According to John Mahama, his government is determined and the gallant men of the Armed Forces and security services are up to the fight, and we will continue to score successes against the selfish companies.
Speaking at the 2025 May Day celebration at the Black Star Square in Accra, John Mahama stated, “The fight against galamsey is a complex one, and when I was vying for the presidency, I did not kid myself that when I come into office, I will win that fight in four months, yet we will not give up”.
“Our gallant men of the Armed Forces and security services are up to the fight, and we will continue to score successes against the selfish companies and individuals who are destroying our forests and polluting our water bodies,” the President stated.
“As far as the fight against galamsey is concerned, I say Aluta Continua”, he boldly declared.
