Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader has stated the judiciary is Ghana’s last hope as the Council of State has failed Ghanaians.
He noted that the Judiciary must unite to defend their institution as the suspension of the Chief Justice undermines our democracy.
According to Afenyo Markin, the Council of State has failed Ghanaians and is urging the judiciary to put aside their differences and know the institution is under attack.
Speaking to the gathering at the “Save the Judiciary” protest, he detailed, “The judiciary is our last hope, and we believe that what is happening undermines our democracy. For the Chief Justice to be singled out for this ‘unfortunate’ attack, a flimsy pedestrian petition.
“The Council of State has failed the government, and we want you as an institution to put aside your individual differences and know that it is your institution that is under attack.
“Maybe today it is Torkonoo, tomorrow it may be you. You don’t serve at the whims and caprices of a political party and a government,” he said.
Afenyo Markin presenting the coalition of political parties led by the New Patriotic Party petition to the Judiciary added, “For the Judiciary to rise, don’t be comfortable because it is Torkornoo. Don’t be comfortable, because you have your own grievances, you also have a party interest, because the attack is benefiting you.
No, be with that attitude of touch one, touch all. Rather, pray that a fair system is created for all to benefit,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
Additionally, Stephen Amoah, a member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Constituency has warned Ghanaians that in future if their child is defiled and they are poor, they are finished.
According to Stephen Amoah, those supposed to ensure justice are the ones being suspended.
He further called on Market women to return home early when they go to the market because there is no law protecting them.
Speaking at the ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration, he stated, “The Constitution is no longer working, If you live in a country where the police, lawyers, and courts are not functioning, then you are unprotected.”
“Our mothers, rush home immediately after selling in the market. If anything happens to you, there is effectively no law to protect you,” he said.
He added, “When your child is defiled in the future, you’ll be finished if you don’t have money. We live in a country where if you are robbed, you cannot speak out.”
“Those who are supposed to ensure justice are the ones being suspended. They are facing reproach from this government.”
