A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Arthur Kennedy has allegedly revealed that the former president Akufo-Addo has withdrawn his support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr Arthur Kennedy claimed that Akufo-Addo is no longer backing Dr Bawumia for a possible 2028 presidential run.
He asserted that his information was accurate, Dr. Kennedy said he preferred to let the former president speak for himself when the time was right, out of respect for him.
Speaking on TV3, when asked by Alferd Ocansey, “Are you saying on record that Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo is not supporting Dr Mahamudu Bawumua anymore should he decide to contest the flagbearership in 2028”
Arthur Kennedy stated, “Yes, I am, Yes I do, I cannot tell you that but if it is not correct whoever is in the know can correct me and as events unfold we will see whether what I have just told you is true or not.
Out of respect to the former president, I will let him lay out his reasoning himself when he is ready”, he boldly added.
His comments come following Dr Bawumia confessing the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government’s sins that led to the 2024 election defeat with many Ghanaians seeing it as him throwing his former boss under the bus.
According to Dr Bawumia, hardship in the country, arrogance displayed by his government, e-levy, the debt restructuring program and the lack of reshuffling of ministerial portfolios caused the NPP’s defeat.
Speaking to members of the party in Takoradi on April 26, as part of the NPP’s Thank You tour in the Western Region, Dr Bawumia stated, “The studies we have done so far, the big issues that people complained about were; the cost of living, there was hardship, arrogance of power and the debt restructuring program. The party suggested we reshuffle our ministerial portfolios.
For eight years we never listened. The party advised against the implementation of the e-levy, and the debt restructuring program. And yet we never listened,” Dr Bawumia lamented.
Dr Bawumia added, “The president announced there would be no haircut, all Ghanaians were happy, but when it came we gave haircuts. When you look the government was not paying NABCO anymore, where not paying afforestation, and the caterers were also not being paid.
Also, in most of the regions that the majority of our votes come from we did not develop the place, the Western Region the roads, the Market Circle we were not able to complete it”.
He further asserted that going into the 2024 elections the NPP was not united.
Dr Bawumia also fired shots at his boss former President Akufo-Addo for spending $58 million in public funds on the National Cathedral.
Dr Bawumia asserted that the spending of $58 million in public funds on the National Cathedral also contributed to the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections.
According to Dr Bawumia, three days before election day fuel prices also went up.
Speaking to members of the party in Takoradi on April 26, as part of the NPP’s Thank You tour in the Western Region, Dr Bawumia stated, “The national cathedral we were not able to complete after $58 million was sunk into it, caused a lot of rage in the public”.
“Also, three days before the election day, the price of fuel went up. When I heard it, I thought it was a joke. The drivers were angry at us. So, people went to vote against us with anger.
That is why we put together the Mike Oquaye Committee to produce a report on why we lost. I am happy that there is no religious factor, and tribal factor that caused our defeat,” he added.
