Edudzi Tamekloe, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama had faith in the now-suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
According to Edudzi Tamakloe, John Mahama told the then NDC minority in parliament not to oppose Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s appointment.
He noted that the Chief Justice’s approval was unanimous both at the committee and plenary levels.
Speaking on TV3 Key Points, Edudzi Tamakloe stated, “President Mahama had faith in Gertrude Torkornoo when she was nominated. He told the Minority not to oppose her appointment. So, when it came to her approval, it was unanimous, both at the committee and plenary levels. That’s the level of confidence President Mahama had in her”.
He further revealed that the decision to suspend Justice Torkornoo was based solely on the petitions received.
“President Mahama had no way of knowing how the now-suspended Chief Justice would conduct herself while in office,” he reiterated.
Meanwhile, suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has filed a lawsuit at the Supreme Court to stop the five-member committee probing her removal.
On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, the Chief Justice requested an interlocutory injunction to halt all proceedings of the committee.
She’s seeking an injunction to halt proceedings, remove two justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu from the panel, and quash her suspension issued by President Mahama.
The court document suggests that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo wants the Supreme Court to issue an order restraining the six-member committee.
She is also asking the court to halt the operation of the warrant for her suspension issued by the President under Article 146(10) of the Constitution until a final determination is made on the matter.
The suit was filed by her legal team at Dame and Partners.
