A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko has fired shots at the Donald Trump-led administration over its attempts to propose a 5% tax on the transfer of remittances by foreign nationals living in the US.

According to Gabby Otchere Darko, Donald Trump froze USAID and is now attacking money sent back home to families back in Africa.

In an X post, Gabby Otchere-Darko, “ America now to tax Diaspora transfers? First it was USAID and now what you send to your families back in Africa is also under attack”.

He further added, “ Now is the time to look at how we can mobilise and aggregate Diaspora funds (and contributions from Africa’s growing middle class) to fund the kinds of infrastructural projects that will accelerate development, integration and prosperity of Africans in Africa”.

The US remittance tax If passed would place a 5% levy on money sent from the U.S. to individuals abroad.

A move that would disproportionately affect immigrants, including Ghanaians living in the U.S.

However, the bill makes exclusions for most remittance transfers made by U.S. citizens.

In 2023, remittance flows from the U.S. to countries around the world reached $93 billion, according to World Bank figures Ghana received over $4.6 billion in total remittances that year.

Meanwhile, a netizen has fired shots at Gabby Otchere Darko following his statement on X.

According to the netizen, Gabby Otchere Darko was part of the government that introduced E-levy to tax electronic funds transfer in Ghana amidst huge public outcry and he is now showing double standards.

He stated, “ Looks like you are not happy about the tax on funds transfer and remittances from the diaspora into Africa.

Coming from a man whose gov’t introduced E-levy to tax electronic funds transfer in Ghana amidst huge public outcry, that is most shocking.

What we are seeing is an unprincipled stand taken by morally bankrupt people. The NPP and its key actors cannot continue to show double standards on key national matters”.
