The minority in Parliament has staged a sit-in outside the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra on Thursday, May 29.
The minority caucus is demanding the release of Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO following a visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Tuesday, May 27 shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.
He spent the night in the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after failing to meet his bail conditions.
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, however, his legal team on Wednesday had not fully satisfied the conditions required to secure his release.
Wontumi is under investigation by EOCO over alleged financial transactions involving the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.
The Minority MPs, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin sit-in comes in response to Wontumi’s continued detention by EOCO after failing to meet the conditions of a GH₵50 million bail,
The minority in parliament had already walked out of Parliament and vowed to boycott all proceedings until EOCO modifies Chairman Wontumi’s bail conditions and releases him.
Afenyo Markin speaking ahead of the NPP’s march to EOCO stated, “Do your work but respect the law. There are many people who have appeared before investigative agencies and they are treated with respect.
They go, cooperate, and when it is time to go to court, they do. But the way we are treating ourselves now—it will come back to haunt us in 2029. Let’s be careful.”
He added, “We don’t have GHS50 million worth of properties. Where is he going to get it from?”
“Until EOCO is able to do the right thing, we the NPP side—however few our numbers—will protest by absenting ourselves from Parliament and join him. We are all going to sleep there with him. We are not going to ask for any property”.
“I pray that my colleagues will support so that with one voice EOCO will know that when it got to this matter of Chairman Wontumi, Parliament was united,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi has secured one surety but needs one more to meet full bail conditions.
