Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader has boldly claimed President John Dramani Mahama is plotting a third-term agenda in disguise.
He noted that the bold attempt by John Mahama to nominate out of the blue seven judges to the Supreme Court and the attempts to remove the Chief Justice are plots to set up a third-term agenda for his leadership.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday, May 1, “We are going on a peaceful demonstration, this is not a parliament fight, it is a fight for every citizen who wants to live in a country where the law is supreme and no man no matter how powerful is above the law.
There must be an end to the division and the anger of the past, this government must tread with the greatest caution always keeping tomorrow in mind when making decisions today because this decision may shape future governments if we continue this path”.
He added, “It is obvious that the bold attempt by Mr President to nominate out of the blue seven judges to the Supreme Court is the first major attempt that they have rehearsed a third-term agenda.
All that the NDC is doing, All that our president is doing through the advice of the hawks of the NDC is to set a third-term agenda for his leadership”.
The minority leader added, “This is not a routine judicial appointment. What we are witnessing is a strategic and deliberate effort to pack the Supreme Court with loyalists. The nomination of seven Appeals Court judges immediately after suspending the Chief Justice reveals a deeper, more dangerous political ambition—a third-term agenda in disguise.”
“This is not how a responsible government strengthens the rule of law. This is how a government tightens its grip on power through the backdoor”
“We must not be silent. This is a national issue that transcends partisan lines. The integrity of our justice system is at stake, and we must resist any attempt to convert it into a political tool,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has also alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is planning to give President John Dramani Mahama a third term.
According to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the plot to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo is linked to an alleged plot by the NDC to enable President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.
He claimed that the argument revolves around Article 66(2) of the Constitution.
Justin Frimpong Kodua noted that some individuals are allegedly planning to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution in a way that implies the two-term limit applies only to two successive terms.
