Manasseh Azure Awuni an award-winning investigative journalist has waded into allegations levelled against President John Dramani Mahama of plotting for a third term by some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Manasseh Azure, President John Mahama is too decent to contemplate a third.
In a short post on his social media page on X, he wrote, “I think John Mahama is too decent to contemplate a third term”.
According to NPP’s Justin Frimpong Kodua, the plot to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo is linked to an alleged plot by the NDC to enable President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.
He claimed that the argument revolves around Article 66(2) of the Constitution.
Justin Frimpong Kodua noted that some individuals are allegedly planning to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution in a way that implies the two-term limit applies only to two successive terms.
The Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin yesterday at the “Save the Judiciary Demo” stated President John Dramani Mahama no longer sees himself as a leader but fancies himself as an autocrat.
He noted that the number of guests at the inauguration of the president told the story, with military dictators, and authoritarian sympathisers at the event.
According to the minority leader, John Mahama every gesture speaks to a cynical agenda to break the Constitution and amend it to allow him fun for a third term.
Presenting a petition to Parliament on behalf of the group, the Leader of the Caucus, Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated, “Since assuming office the president has weaponised the security service deploying them in PNDC style on the homes of political opponents. Private citizens including the former governor of the Central Bank Dr Addison and former finance minister Ken Ofori Atta have had their properties seized and rights violated.
This is not governance it is tyranny clothed in robes of democracy, additionally, this government has dismissed senior military officers with years of faithful service.
Our military was once revered for its non-partisanship is now being painted in NDC colours this is a dangerous betrayal. The President no longer sees himself as a president he fancies himself as an autocrat a ruler for life”.
He added, “The number of guests a the inauguration told the story, of military dictators, authoritarian sympathisers, and men of empty iron fists and empty consent and as if to erase all doubt the president donned full military regalia at a recent armed forces even parading as the commander of the nation he plans to subdue not to serve.
His every gesture speaks to a cynical agenda to break the Constitution and amend it, to prolong his grip on power abetted by the Judiciary he is desperate to capture. The president is looking forward to using the Judiciary for a term this explains the relentless siege on the Judiciary.”
Meanwhile, Mahama Ayariga the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central has stated the minority leader Alexander Afenyo Markin is the one putting the allegation of President John Mahama plotting a third term into the minds of Ghanaians.
