Some traders in Tudu have expressed strong dissatisfaction after the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) confiscated their goods for unlawful selling on pavements.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) began its major decongestion exercise on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The AMA task forces, accompanied by the Ghana Police Service, carried out operations to dismantle makeshift stalls, and unauthorised kiosks, and remove vendors from pavements and roadsides across key parts of the Central Business District.
According to the AMA, the first phase of the exercise is focused on the AMA Head Office, Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square through to Adabraka.
They revealed that the operation which will last for 2 weeks is to enforce city bylaws, ease congestion, and ensure the safe movement of both pedestrians and vehicles.
The traders argued that street vending is their sole means of livelihood and supports their children, so removing them was unfair.
They also claimed that the previous government had not treated them this way, but the current administration is already treating them poorly just a few months into its term.
The trader stated, “ Nana Addo in 8 years did not sack us, we were selling at the roadside to cater for our children. We have voted for you in just 5 months you are sacking us from the pavement”.
However, a video has also surfaced of some Makola market women showering praises on the Mayor of Accra for carrying out a massive decongestion exercise on Tuesday morning.
In the viral video shared on X, the market woman was captured showering praises on the Accra Mayor and his team as they embarked on the decongestion exercise.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have expressed their opinion saying, “Ghana moving forward it will be very hard for us ooo. Sorry but when I say my own Kumasi people some fool too much. Is the road made for selling”.
“With this kind of mentality, how can we make progress as a country? Why do we have to politicize this?”, another wrote.
One netizen also added, “Oh God … we go develop na ekeep waaa.. pavements are made for pedestrians to walk on … it’s not meant for selling… sometimes u have to walk on the main road cos they’ve taken over the pedestrian walkway… The AMA boss is doing the right thing”.
