Patricia Appiagyei, the Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament has said she feels sad when she looks at President John Dramani Mahama’s list of appointees.
According to Patricia Appiagyei, the majority of President Mahama’s appointees are Northerners which she believes is a dangerous trend.
Patricia Appiagyei, expressed concerns over what she describes as a disproportionate number of Northerners among President Mahama’s appointees.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM on 15 May 2025, Patricia Appiagyei lamented, “When I look at the names of appointees, I feel sad, all the names that are coming up in the whole of Ghana whether being nominated as Chief Executive most of them are from the North.
In our Asanteman here it is even surprising, what I am seeing is that maybe he did not get Northern women, that is why he told us that he was not getting women to be appointed. If that is what he was going to use to work, he has a problem”.
She continued, “But if he wants every Ghanaian to help in the Local government or District Assemblies governance there are a lot of people when you delve deep you will find them to work.
When you go to social media you will see the names listed, when you see the names what do you ask yourself? Even looking at the recent district Assembly appointees most of them are Northerners and it is very dangerous”.
She noted that the 1992 constitution of Ghana prescribes regional balance when appointees are being named.
“The whole of Ghana voted, or am I lying the laws of Ghana which is the constitution prescribe that when appointees are being appointed there must be a balance, why has it gotten to this?
If you look at the population size they are not even more than the rest of us. The population size we the Akans and the other tribes is more than them. So why is the appointment loft-sided? “, she quizzed President Mahama.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians under the post have fired shots at the deputy minority leader saying, “Kwasia when akans dominated nana addo’s government did you see people making tribal comments like this? Mo dier politics nti gyimie seei saaa smh”.
“Are they not humans? Are they not worth the position? Enough of tribal politics”, one stated.
One X user added, “ I so much dislike tribal politics. No matter the angle you look at it, it’s just bad. We can do better”.
Additionally, an X user stated, “When Akufo-Addo appointed Akans to run the country, how did it end up? If president Mahama feels that it’s the northerners that can help him achieve his goals, so be it. After all, they humans and Ghanaians”.
One more wrote, “Aaaah sometimes do these leaders think before they speak ah madam this is too low. A deputy minority leader in a party projecting a northerner to be president please tell us something better cos we consider you to be experienced in the game”.
