Awal Mohammed a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team has urged the John Mahama government to cut utility tariffs for Ghanaians to benefit from the recent cedi appreciation.
Awal Mohammed is quoted by UTV to have stated, “Government must cut electricity and water tariffs for Ghanaians to receive direct benefits of the cedi’s appreciation”.
The PURC in a statement announced that electricity and water tariffs will be increased by an average of 14.75%, while water tariffs will go up by 4.02%.
According to the statement the new tariffs, took effect on May 3, 2025.
The PURC recognized the adjustments were due to the exchange rate between the Ghanaian cedi and the US dollar, inflation projections, fuel costs, and the current hydro-thermal generation mix.
According to Bloomberg reports the Ghana cedi has appreciated since the beginning of April, appreciating by a remarkable 16%.
As of May 14, 2025, the cedi is trading at GH¢12.59 to the dollar.
The finance minister has also called on businesses to reflect their pricing as the cedi improves for Ghanaians to truly feel the recovery.
Ato Forson, “ We are seeing improvements in the cedi. It’s time for businesses to reflect this in their pricing. GUTA should support this effort so Ghanaians can truly feel the recovery”.
Meanwhile, Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Jinapor has appealed to Ghanaians to bear with the government as they make difficult necessary decisions to ensure the end of erratic power supply commonly known as dumsor.
John Jinapor is quoted by JOY NEWS to have stated, “Bear with us as we take difficult but necessary decisions to ensure stable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all”.
