Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has charged Ghanaians against the John Mahama government.
He accused John Mahama of unfair treatment and political persecution.
According to Chairman Wontumi, NPP supporters and all Ghanaians must rise against what he perceives as political oppression.
The National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service on Friday, May 23, 2025, stormed the residence of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to effect an arrest.
According to reports, the NIB has withdrawn its men following NPP supporters massing up at Wontumi’s residence.
Reports suggest the NIB left following an order for them to immediately withdraw all officers from the scene.
The reason for the National security presence remains unclear.
The atmosphere has since calmed but the NPP supporters continue to maintain a presence around the residence.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Friday, May 23, Chairman Wontumi stated, “Am I not a Ghanaian anymore? Now that you’ve won the election and become President, does that mean I’m no longer a Ghanaian?” he asked.
“Ghanaians, rise! Arise, Ghanaians! All NPP supporters should rise. It is because of you that Mahama is treating me this way,” he rallied for support.
“Was I ever a Vice President? Have I ever chaired a board? Have I ever been a CEO? Was I ever a minister?” he questioned.
“You collapsed my business back in 2013. Since you assumed office, you’ve halted all my operations. Even the bank account I rely on has been frozen,” he added.
Chairman Wontumi had earlier quizzed President John Dramani Mahama about why he froze his accounts.
According to Wontumi, he never served under Akufo-Addo’s administration, so why is the Mahama government attacking him?
Chairman Wontumi cried out that the way the Mahama government was handling him was not right.
He claimed that the John Mahama government personally hated him and accused him wrongly.
Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV on May 15, 2025, he alleged “They know Wontumi is winning, so they want to attack me. I have never been on any board, never worked as a government official, and never served under Akufo-Addo’s administration, so why attack me?
There is no minister who can say they have given me a job before. So why would you close Wontumi’s account? For what reason?
“Mahama, the way your government is handling me is not right. This isn’t how things should be. I believe this is personal hatred and wrongful accusation. We went for an election, and you have won, so focus on your government,” he added.
