Following a decisive ruling by an Accra High Court, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully retrieved 16 acres of airport lands from the McDan Group of companies.
On May 6, 2025, the Accra High Court granted GACL full possession of parcels of land—measuring approximately 10.63 and 5.66 acres located close to the Kotoka International Airport.
The lands were previously held by McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both under the McDan Group umbrella, since 2012.
The GACL initiated legal actions in February 2025, alluding to longstanding breaches of lease agreements and unpaid ground rent totalling $26,296
They also requested an injunction to prevent any future interference by the McDan companies.
Reports suggest the court in its ruling awarded all the GACL repossession of the lands, payment of the outstanding rent, and an additional GH¢50,000 in legal costs.
According to the court, the defendant McDan group failed to present a valid defence, justifying the summary judgment in GACL’s favour.
It will be recalled in December 2024 McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were suspended over debt obligations.
GACL management hailed the court’s decision as a major milestone in its asset recovery efforts.
A source within GACL stated, “The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability and lawful management of public property”.
Meanwhile, the GACL is expected to consider aviation-related projects or strategic partnerships to optimise the use of the space and enhance revenue generation.
