The information gathered also reveals Ghana’s energy debts have ballooned to over $3 billion when the debts of the state-run Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are added.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has frequently been signalling Ghana’s energy debt as a critical risk.

JOY NEWS is quoted to have said, “Karpower serves notice to shut down their plant by 18th May due to $ 400 million debt”.

Meanwhile, Karpowership Ghana has revealed there is no immediate threat of a power shutdown.

Sandra Amarquaye, Communication Manager for Karpowership Ghana speaking in an interview with Joy Business revealed, “We had a meeting with the Minister of Energy to bring to his attention the accumulated debt and engage in negotiations.

Discussions are still ongoing, and there is no threat of a shutdown based on our engagement with the government”.

“Our relationship with Ghana remains strong, and we remain committed to working collaboratively towards a sustainable solution,” Ms Amarquaye added.
