Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has expressed disappointment that members of parliament have neither owned up nor accepted responsibility and that fellow MPs have also failed to identify the MP who called Korle Klottey MP, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings “Daughter of a murderer”.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin was on the floor addressing Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, when a loud voice from the back bench from the Minority in Parliament called a Majority MP “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”
Following the incident, both the majority and minority have condemned the comment against Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings.
It will be recalled Alban Bagbin issued an ultimatum for the MP who called former President Rawlings a murderer.
According to Alban Bagbin, the member of parliament if found guilty could face a suspension not exceeding 9 months or expelled from parliament.
Alban Bagbin further advised the member of parliament responsible to within a week show honesty and plead guilty rather than wait for the outcome of the investigation.
Speaker Bagbin’s directive comes following a petition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Speaker Bagbin to investigate the matter and the Volta Diaspora Caucus also presented a petition to the Speaker to investigate the matter.
Addressing the House on Tuesday, May 27, Bagbin said, “The investigations are still not concluded, but to be frank with you, I am very disappointed with all of you,”
“A member seated in this House with all colleagues around uttered those words, and no single colleague can pinpoint who it was. Even among the three of you seated together — the zone is on the three — none can say who said it.”
“The majority members, with your numbers watching the minority — you are telling me none of you can identify the person who spoke? The person spoke not once, but twice, and even the Minority Leader turned in that direction, yet still no identification?” he asked.
Bagbin stressed, “These are serious matters. When they are properly brought to me, I take action. Shouts and noise will not compel me to act — you know what to do.”
