John Bonaventure Kwofie the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra has quizzed, President John Dramani Mahama as to whether the country is fighting to regain our forest and river bodies.
According to the Catholic Archbishop, public patience is wearing thin when it comes to the galamsey menace.
The Catholic Archbishop further quizzed the President on his May Day address.
He questioned the government’s commitment to ending the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
His comment comes on the back of John Dramani Mahama stating the fight against illegal mining commonly known as galamsey is a complex one.
According to John Mahama, his government is determined and the gallant men of the Armed Forces and security services are up to the fight, and we will continue to score successes against the selfish companies.
“As far as the fight against galamsey is concerned, I say Aluta Continua”, he boldly added.
Speaking during a homily at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Accra on Sunday, Archbishop Kwofie stated, “Is that a make-believe talk, or will you take it seriously? We don’t want this talk, we want action”.
“Nothing is too late for the President to say ‘enough is enough.’ Galamsey is a complex war, yes, but the complexity cannot be whisked away. We must fight it. We must be seen fighting against galamsey”, he added.
He further referenced the President’s May Day address, saying, “In your May Day address, you told us that our gallant men of the armed forces and security services are up to the task.”
“Is that a make-believe talk, or will you take it seriously? We don’t want this talk, we want action. We are poisoning our waters, and we are losing our forests. Let us see our gallant men and women of the armed forces [take action]. The security service has not given up on the fight.”
“Are we fighting to regain our forest zones and river bodies? Aluta Continua”, he added.
