Mahama Ayariga the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central has stated the minority leader Alexander Afenyo Markin is the one putting the allegation of President John Mahama plotting a third term into the minds of Ghanaians.
According to the majority leader the NDC and John Mahama are not plotting to pursue a “third-term agenda.
Alexander Afenyo Markin speaking at a press conference organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday, May 1, “We are going on a peaceful demonstration, this is not a parliament fight, it is a fight for every citizen who wants to live in a country where the law is supreme and no man no matter how powerful is above the law.
There must be an end to the division and the anger of the past, this government must tread with the greatest caution always keeping tomorrow in mind when making decisions today because this decision may shape future governments if we continue this path”.
He added, “It is obvious that the bold attempt by Mr President to nominate out of the blue seven judges to the Supreme Court is the first major attempt that they have rehearsed a third-term agenda.
All that the NDC is doing, All that our president is doing through the advice of the hawks of the NDC is to set a third-term agenda for his leadership”.
Reacting to the Minority leader’s press conference on Citi Prime News on May 2, Mahama Ayariga stated, “I think he is the one who is putting the idea in the minds of Ghanaians. I am not sure I have heard Ghanaians having that discussion or even the strategists of the NDC having that conversation.
“He is the one putting this in the minds of Ghanaians. The conversation of him running for a third term even came up before he filed to contest as flagbearer of the NDC in the 2024 general election. Indeed, some people threatened to go to the Supreme Court to stop him from contesting because they thought he would contest for a third term”, he added.
Meanwhile, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has also alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is planning to give President John Dramani Mahama a third term.
According to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the plot to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo is linked to an alleged plot by the NDC to enable President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.
He claimed that the argument revolves around Article 66(2) of the Constitution.
Justin Frimpong Kodua noted that some individuals are allegedly planning to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution in a way that implies the two-term limit applies only to two successive terms.
