Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in parliament has teased President John Mahama over his flagship 24-Hour Economy.
According to Afenyo Markin, the 24-Hour Economy initiative is a “political gimmick” as the government has failed to deliver on its promised Ghanaians.
He further teased that the 24-Hour Economy initiative has fallen into the water.
Speaking at a Minority press conference following the President’s 120 days address to Ghanaians, Afenyo Markin stated, “It is rich to hear the President tell us in the SONA that the flagship programme, the 24-Hour Economy – also known as 1,3,3: one job, three shifts – will find space in the 2025 budget,” he said. “But what did we hear? Another ‘matriki wo’!”
“Yesterday, as typical of them, they inaugurated another committee responsible for enacting the 24-Hour Economy,” Afenyo-Markin said. “Ei President Mahama… ‘3baa ne s3n?’ 24-Hour Economy atɔ nsuom!”
Meanwhile, President John Mahama has announced substantial advancements in implementing his administration’s transformative 24-hour economy policy.
Speaking to Ghanaians yesterday 7 May 2025 about his 120-day social contract, he stated, “The program rollout has commenced in earnest. We promised to commence drafting the needed legal amendments and prepare for implementation within the first 120 days – and we have delivered on that promise.”
“These amendments aim to enhance social protection, create an enabling environment for the 24-hour economy policy, and promote conducive business and labour relations,” he explained.
He added, “The Ghana Investment Promotion Center has launched 24-hour premium services to eliminate processing delays for investors. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a 24-hour passport service, and the DVLA used extended hours to clear an 18-month backlog of licenses.”
“The Youth Employment Agency is set to launch the graduates in corporate support program, which will attach graduates to firms operating 24 hours a day. This program is targeting 20,000 graduates”, the Mahama announced.
John Mahama continued, “Recognizing the need for robust security, the police service is establishing a 24-hour police unit to improve night patrols and utilize technology. The Minister of Energy is engaging the PURC to set up smart metering with time-of-use tariffs, charging lesser rates during off-peak hours,” the President revealed.
Already, several businesses are lining up to sign on to this policy. We are pursuing new avenues of job creation, expanding employment opportunities, particularly for young graduates, and empowering the private sector as a key driver of sustainable job creation.”
“This program is designed to drive structural transformation across our economy, built on pillars aimed at revamping key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and tourism”, he added.
