Former Medical Director of the Ridge Hospital, Dr Thomas Anaba has stated President John Dramani Mahama has proven that what former president Akufo-Addo said about Ghana sitting on money but Ghanaians are hungry.
Dr Thomas Anaba noted that John Mahama has scraped the E-levy and Betting tax but still found money to replace those tax revenues.
He also asserted that the President has found a way to tackle the frozen USAID by the US President Donald Trump.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana, Dr Thomas Anaba stated, “If the government spend money on developing the country, make sure you go to the hospital, your child goes to school there is a chair for him to sit and the teacher is comfortable.
You are driving on the road and the road signage is there and there aren’t potholes and you even increase the road toll I bet you, we will pay, but for now, once the country is hot, and everybody is hot, the best thing to do is to relieve Ghanaians from the obnoxious taxes”.
He further added, “The government has not only just relieved them from paying the taxes he has found money to cushion where that money was coming to cover very nice move, even money that we were getting free from the United States he has found money to put it there.
It means that what our former president said, Yɛte sika so nso ɛkɔm di yɛn is really true there is money we just have to distribute it so everybody will have a feel of it and everybody will benefit from it”, Dr Thomas Anaba detailed.
His comment comes after John Dramani Mahama assented to bills to abolish the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), Betting Tax, and Emissions Levy.
Many business owners, mobile money agents, and financial analysts had previously criticized the levy, citing its impact on digital transactions and financial accessibility.
The betting tax which taxed a 10% charge on gross winnings from gambling activities, also faced criticism from investors in the gaming industry.
This move aligns with the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) commitment to alleviating the financial burden on Ghanaians and also fulfils Mahama’s campaign pledge to abolish these taxes within his first 120 days in office if elected.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has ordered the charging entities to immediately refund deducted Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) charges.
According to the GRA statement, charging entities must immediately process refunds for any E-Levy amounts deducted from customers effective 2nd April 2025.
