Kwesi Pratt Jr the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper has quizzed why there have been so many petitions sent to the presidency for the removal of suspended Chief Justice Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The seasoned journalist noted that for the first time in Ghana’s history, five petitions have gone to the presidency for the removal of the Chief Justice.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana, Kwesi Pratt stated, “All of us or many people are talking about the contents of the petitions that went to the President.
“I count four—actually five. And then I ask myself: what is it with this Chief Justice that, for the first time in our history, five petitions have gone to the presidency for her removal? Something must be wrong. What is it? Is it her conduct? What has necessitated this?”
He added, “The constitution is very clear that this should be done in confidence. The petition itself need not be disclosed to the public. The hearing ought to be held in camera”.
“There’s a reason the drafters did that—to avoid vexatious and frivolous petitions being made public and causing reputational damage to someone who might eventually be vindicated.”
The Seasoned journalist continued, “Who is deliberately disrespecting the provisions of the constitution? Is it the Chief Justice herself or the presidency? Because at this point, she’s the only one known to have leaked something—proven and known, not rumors.”
Do you remember President John Mahama’s letter to the Chief Justice?
He complained that her request for permission to respond to allegations against her was leaked. That was done in bad faith,” Pratt noted.
Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Chief Executive Officer of GoldBoard has revealed his sources have informed him that 30 out of the 31 Council of State members support prima facie cases against the suspended Chief Justice Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, nobody can tell him that all the 30 members of the Council of State are NDC members who hate the Chief Justice.
Speaking on JOY FM, Sammy Gyamfi stated, “From my sources, 30 out of the 31 said that there is a prima facie case to be determined and that the nature of the allegations made against the Chief Justice justify her suspension pending the outcome of the investigation”.
Additionally, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo has filed a motion at the Supreme Court to halt the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
The member of parliament is seeking the Supreme Court to halt the suspension of the Chief Justice over claims President Mahama had violated due process.
