Young children in Nkroful, the hometown of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah face significant risk on a daily basis to access education.
In a video shared on X, young children can be seen risking their lives to cross a makeshift bridge made from a fallen tree to and from school.
In the video, the four (4) young girls were seen taking turns to cross the fallen tree bridge all alone.
What made situation very sad was when one little girl after crossing the makeshift bridge halfway began sobbing as she feared going further as the older girls watched desperately being unable to help her.
However, after the video was shared on X, a resident of Nkroful addressed the matter saying the video is not the accurate description of happenings at Nkroful.
According to him, some residents seeking a shorter route between New Town and Old Town suburbs in Nkroful created the bridge seen in the video, prioritizing convenience over safety.
In his explanation, he wrote, “I wish to clarify that this bridge is not part of any officially recognized public road in Nkroful, but rather an informal structure built by individuals who have decided to prioritize convenience over safety.”
In February 2025, a similar video in which two young boys were seen dangerously crossing a makeshift bridge, in an attempt to get home from school at Asamankese Asuokaw surfaced online.
The video sparked outrage among concerned individuals.
President Mahama chanced upon the video and assured residents of Asuokow in the Eastern Region of swift action to address the issue.
President Mahama in a Facebook stated.“Earlier today, the MP for Lower West Akim, Owen Kwame Frimpong, visited the Asuokow community and assured them the Eastern Regional Minister will also visit, as we work to permanently and urgently resolve the challenge the people and the school children are confronted with”.
“Our quest to Reset Ghana includes a determination to remove barriers to education and healthcare across the country,” he stated.
This video from Nkroful has also received intense concern from Ghanaians once again.
Read some comments below:
@MensahPrincy – The most awful part is that , the parents don’t even have time to accompany these kids
@BraPhile – In Nkrumah’s own hometown, kids cross rivers on a tree trunk just to get to school. No bridge, No shame. And the MP @ArmahKofiBuah missing in action, but never misses ex-gratia. This is not just neglect. It’s betrayal. #FixTheCountry #GhanaDeservesBetter
@_Roofman2131gh – Wow isn’t that place supposed to be developed for tourism purposes at least If nothing at all for that, hmm Ghana
@kojocona – No child should have to risk their life just to go to school. I hope the MP and the government will treat this with the urgency it deserves.
@JohnSeekera – Proper check needs to be done Saddick ,it could be that they have a place better than this but this way might be shorter.lets ask ourselves de school must be in de township or closer, are we saying old aged also use this?
@NanaDarko__-This is also Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah’s constituency, Minister for Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources
