A video has surfaced of a man believed to be of Kusasi descent inciting violence on social media.
The Kusasi man urged members of the Kusasi community to open fire on any police officers, soldiers, or Mamprusis they encounter, alleging that these groups are aligned against them.
In the video, he accused security personnel of siding with the Mamprusi faction in the ongoing conflict in Bawku, even claiming that they provide military uniforms to aid attacks against the Kusasis.
Some Ghanaians have reacted to the man’s video saying, “ What is the population of Bawku? Just deploy the military to bring peace”.
One x user stated, “Govt should withdraw all military and police personnel’s in that area and just leave them to their fate. Looks like they are not ready to learn, allow them do what pleases them”.
“This guy just rented himself an apartment for some few years in jail. It’s only a matter of time until he’s moved into it”, a netizen also stated.
Additionally, Police Officers stationed in Bawku have called upon the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno to withdraw them from the town.
According to the police officers, violence in Bawku keeps escalating, hence their call on the IGP to withdraw them as their lives are at risk.
In a series of voice notes shared by some police officers in the area who have found their way to X, one could hear the sounds of rapid gunfire as the officers sought for cover indoors.
“They are firing guns now. There are no lights and they are shooting all around,” a policewoman was heard saying.
A policeman was also heard saying, “Charley, we are not safe. They’ve switched off lights here and they are firing guns sporadically.”
There has been an escalation of violence following the resurgence of a long-standing chieftaincy conflict, sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.
Abagre fled Bawku after an arrest warrant was issued against him following his contested installation as chief in Nalerigu, a High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, nullified the warrant, allowing him to resurface.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II mediation process will deliver lasting peace in Bawku.
President Mahama at the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy revealed that the Otumfuo has assured him the mediation process will resume this week when he returns from his brief visit abroad.
