Reports suggest the late Pope Francis the head of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of the Vatican City died with just $100 to his name.
According to reports, at the time of his death, Pope Francis’s personal wealth was reported to be just $100 less than 90 euros.
Reports also suggest he owned no property, held no personal bank accounts, and had no investments.
Although entitled to an annual salary of roughly 340,000 euros as Pope, he never accepted a cent of it.
As a member of the Society of Jesus, he had taken a lifelong vow of poverty and honoured it throughout his pontificate.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell in a statement announced the dead of the Pope. He said, “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.
“At 7.35am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.
“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.
“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Pope Francis’s death came just a day after he delighted the crowds of worshippers at the Vatican on Easter Sunday with an appearance on the balcony at Saint Peter’s Basilica despite still convalescing after a severe illness.
Meanwhile, an estimated 400,000 people lined the streets of Rome and gathered inside St Peter’s Square for the funeral of Pope Francis in Vatican City, marking the culmination of days of mourning.
The funeral of the late Pope Francis took place at St Peter’s Square on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10 a.m.
Pope Francis “touched minds and hearts” and wanted to “build bridges, not walls”,
Pope Francis ‘coffin has also now been entombed.
The Pope ‘s final resting place is the Basilica of St. Mary Major in central Rome. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets to watch as his coffin was brought from the Vatican to the Basilica. The Pope is the first in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican, and his entombment was a private event, allowing for those closest to him to pay their respects.
“He became the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church when he replaced the retiring Benedict XVI in 2013. Francis adopted a markedly less formal tone than previous popes in his time as the leader of the Church, underlining his reputation for simplicity and humility.
This simplicity was again evident in the wishes he had for proceedings following his death. He was laid to rest in a simple wooden casket rather than the more elaborate ones used for previous papal burials, made of three nesting coffins made of cypress, lead, and oak”.
According to reports, more than 100 foreign delegations attended the funeral including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump.
An estimated 1.4 billion Catholics across the world will mourn Pope Francis’ passing.
