Richard Jakpa, the Director in charge of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat has revealed the official Bank of Ghana (BoG) money boxes were discovered at the Sarpeiman fake gold bust scene.
According to Richard Jakpa, several official Bank of Ghana (BoG) money boxes were at the scene and also confirmed authorities have verified that these boxes are genuine.
He revealed that the operation was a highly organized criminal network and the suspected mastermind, identified only as “Alhaji,” remains at large.
In an exclusive tour of the crime scene with some media persons, Richard Jakpa revealed the evidence retrieved.
Mr Jakpa told the media men, “We have solid evidence connecting Alhaji to the crime scene and the broader network of illegal activities. We are confident that it is only a matter of time before he is apprehended.”
It will be recalled in February 2025, the National Security in a raid of Sapeiman uncovered a massive stash of US dollars, Gold bars and counterfeit Ghana cedi notes.
According to reports, a tip-off led security operatives to trace twelve 20ft shipping containers to a secret location in Sapeiman inside a warehouse in the Ga South Municipality.
The illicit stash was smartly hidden in wooden crates, concealed with cement and charcoal.
Reports also revealed that the warehouse raid uncovered gold bars, counterfeit Ghana cedi notes in ₵50 and ₵100 monies, as well as fake Ghana Army uniforms and boots.
According to Richard Jakpa, One of the most eye-opening discoveries was an uncompleted building which served as a primary front for the illicit operation.
At its entry, an elderly man locally known as the “Battery Doctor” ran a vehicle battery-charging service, a deliberate deception calculated to draw away suspicion.
But a walk into the interior revealed stacks of counterfeit notes in numerous currencies and denominations.
Fake gold bars were also found by investigators many of which were already peeling to reveal silver-coloured metal beneath.
