Revealed – John Dumelo, 53 others defy Mahama as they fail to declare their asset

The Deputy agric minister John Dumelo together with some other Fifty-three appointees under the John Dramani Mahama government have defied the president’s directive by not declaring their assets by 31st March.  

Reports suggest, that eight out of Fifty-five ministers and deputies, eight out of thirty-two presidential staffers and thirty-seven of the Eighty-four heads of state institutions appointed by President Mahama have failed to declare their assets as of April 17, 2024.

According to the reports by The Fourth Estate, 32% of the appointees have ignored the president’s directive and failed to fulfil the constitutional obligation.

Alhassan Suhuyini, Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways; Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, and John Dumelo, Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture are among the names of minister yet to declare their assets.

The presidential staffers are made up of the Presidential Adviser on the Economy; Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, Special Envoy to the Alliance of Sahelian States; Nathan Kofi Boakye, Director of Operations at the Presidency; Charles Kipo, Director of the National Investigations Bureau; Nana Yaa Jantuah, a presidential staffer.

President John Dramani Mahama had earlier warned that any of his appointees who fail to declare their assets by 31st March will face severe sanction which includes removal from office.

According to President Mahama, the move is to enhance transparency and strengthen the fight against corruption.

Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution, mandates public officials to declare their assets upon assumption of office.

John Mahama on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, declared his assets and officially submitted it to the Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, at the Jubilee House.

John Mahama revealed he takes the declaration of assets very seriously and expects full compliance from all his appointees.

Speaking following the submission, John Mahama stated, “In times past, I would privately present these forms to the Auditor General in fulfillment of my statutory obligation. I have taken the step of presenting these forms publicly as a way of injecting some openness and transparency into the process of asset declaration”.

“I have also taken this step to send an unmistakable signal to all public office holders, especially those that I have appointed that I take the declaration of assets very seriously and expect full compliance from them”.

“I have asked the Chief of Staff to send word to all appointees to ensure that they declare their assets by the end of the first quarter of this year, that is by 31st March 2025. I wish to stress that any appointee failing to meet the deadline will face severe sanctions, not excluding removal from office”, he boldly stated.

The list comprises appointees who were appointed between January 15 and March 18 but have failed to meet President Mahama’s 31^st March deadline.
