Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Mamponghene has issued an ultimatum to the leadership of the National Democratic Congress in the Mampong Constituency.
According to the Ashanti Mampong Traditional Council led by the Mamponghene, the NDC Mampong has less than 24 hours to retract their anti-Ashanti comments made by some youth of the party.
It will be recalled some National Democratic Congress youths in Asante Mampong have boldly stated they want a northerner as Mampong Municipal Chief Executive(MCE).
According to the Mampong youths they submitted three names which they want as MCE but the name they are seeing is not one of the names nominated.
They further noted that the three names submitted worked very hard to get the NDC some 16,000 votes in the elections.
One of the leaders of the Asante Mampong Youth stated, “This morning, we are greeting all Ghanaians, particularly people from Asante Mampong, we are telling our party leaders at the regional level, national level and our father his excellency John Mahama.
Our statement is just short, Mampong NDC In some years past when we voted the NDC vote in Mampong was less than 4000 but today our vote is over 16,000. Some person have carried the party on their shoulders and have worked, and today they are looking for MCE”.
He further stated, “We have shortlisted Chairman Tano Mohammed, Yakubu Issifu parliamentary candidate, and Alhaji Moro who is also a former chairman for one to be MCE. When we went to sleep and woke up we heard different names which are not part of the three names listed.
We are only one of the three listed persons as MCE, for us to work with him. We are looking for a Northerner to become an MCE in Mampong”.
The group stated that “No Ashanti will be allowed to become MCE of Mampong”.
The statement has been heavily condemned as anti-Ashanti and disrespectful to the owners of Mampong land.
Speaking at his palace on Sunday, April 13, 2025, Daasebre Osei Bonsu fumed saying, “Why are some people, whether they were drunk or high on those red or blue or whatever you call them, so mad that they felt the need to destroy what we all share as a people? And you, the party leaders, feel scared to call them to order. It is not nice; it is very disgraceful”.
“Advise those in the NDC who put up the despicable act. They have until tomorrow afternoon… If not, we shall shake things up for them to know that we wield the power and the entire jurisdiction”, he stated.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu added, “Because of my work at the university, I have travelled a lot. There is no place you mention that I don’t know of. But our place is the only place where you find Sarkin Zongo, Ewe Chiefs, and whatnot… You are all Mampong people.
We respect and treat everyone as equal, so why are some people trying to cause division among us?” he questioned.
The Mamponghene reaction follows the actions of some NDC youth who have been campaigning against the possible nomination of an Ashanti by President John Dramani Mahama for the MCE position in the area.
