Reports have emerged that gunmen stormed the palace of a local sub-chief in Poayamire, a community in the Binduri District, on the night of Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
According to reports the attack left one person dead and two others injured.
The information gathered reveals Naba Atamburi, the sub-chief, along with two of his family members sustained gunshot wounds during the assault and were rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for emergency treatment, but one of the injured died on the way.
Additionally, a Police commander’s residence in Bawku in the Upper East Region has been burnt with one person reported dead.
The private residence of ACP Adamu Seidu, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, was set ablaze by suspected assailants on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
According to reports, tensions arose once again when members of one faction demanded that women from another faction vacate a local market. The confrontation resulted in the police swiftly intervening to restore calm in the market.
However, the situation deteriorated when some youths allegedly opened fire on officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the exchange of gunfire, one civilian was fatally wounded, while two others sustained severe injuries.
The incident reportedly incited retaliatory actions, culminating in the arson attack on ACP Seidu’s private residence.
It remains unclear whether the property was occupied at the time.
Further reports indicate that a police barracks was also attacked, with a police vehicle set on fire. The severity of the assault forced the evacuation of personnel from the facility.
Security agencies have since intensified efforts to stabilize the area, though tensions remain high.
There has been an escalation of violence following the resurgence of a long-standing chieftaincy conflict, sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.
Abagre fled Bawku after an arrest warrant was issued against him following his contested installation as chief in Nalerigu, a High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, nullified the warrant, allowing him to resurface.
Meanwhile, John Mahama days after his swearing-in embarked on a peace Mission to Bawku but the outcome of that meeting is yet to be seen as the conflict has escalated further.
