Afrifa Mensah is leading a pressure group named, the Generational Rights Protection Society (GRPS). The groups mandate is to mount intense on the government to take decisive action against galamsey.

The group has embarked on a three-day demonstration which started on Monday, March 28, 2025.

According to the group, illegal mining continues to wreak havoc on communities and the environment, with little meaningful intervention from authorities.

The demonstrators, predominantly dressed in red and black, gathered at the Obra Spot at Circle for the start of their march, yesterday and ended at the Jubilee House.

Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Blood, Gold, Greed!” and “Stop Galamsey Now!”, the protesters demonstrated high energy and determination.

The convenor of the protest, Okatakyire Kwame Afrifa Mensah, also shared his frustrations. He argued that although the President has only been in office for four months, that should not be an excuse for the continued devastation caused by galamsey, including rising cases of kidney diseases and loss of lives among Ghanaians.

He pointed out that when President Mahama came in, within the same four-month period, he was able to send a bill to Parliament to establish a Gold Board.

He added, “When the current President came in, he was able to quickly take steps that benefited himself and his government. So it’s all about the scale of preferences and priorities.

On day one of the demonstration, the number of people who showed up to partake in the protest were fewer than expected.

According to blogger Bongo Ideas, Ghanaians, particularly the youth refused to show up for the demonstration because they believe it is a New Patriotic Party (NPP) front which seeks to malign the Mahama led administration despite the many wins made in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

He further poked fan at the GRPS and Okatakyie Kwame Afrifa Mensah by sharing a video of countless placards being conveyed to the starting point of the demonstration with the caption, “More placards than human beings.”
