Election 2024 campaign spokesperson for the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye says Dr. Bawumia’s openness about the party’s shortcomings is a step in the right direction for rebuilding the NPP.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s decision to make these revelations is the right way to go, as it will give the party a strong footing in the coming years.
“If he’s outlining these things, coming out for some of the reasons for our loss, I think it’s a way to go. It’s a better way to rebuild as an organization than to gloss over them and pretend as if they didn’t exist,” he said.
“If you have a leader who is able to admit such shortfalls, then that is a leader you can trust. Once you acknowledge your challenges, you’re like 50% solving them…Dr Bawumia acknowledged the high cost of living and made certain proposals to deal with that.
“He has always had issues with E-levy. He’s on public record, indicating that he doesn’t think that we should under any circumstances place any form of taxes or levies on digital transactions,” he stated.
His clarification follows recent comments by Dr. Bawumia, who cited the arrogance of power, the high cost of living, the failure to reshuffle government officials, the E-Levy, and the controversial haircut policy as major factors behind the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking to members of the party in Takoradi on April 26, as part of the NPP’s Thank You tour in the Western Region, Dr Bawumia stated, “The studies we have done so far, the big issues that people complained about were; the cost of living, there was hardship, arrogance of power and the debt restructuring program. The party suggested we reshuffle our ministerial portfolios.”
“For eight years we never listened. The party advised against the implementation of the e-levy, and the debt restructuring program. And yet we never listened,” Dr Bawumia lamented.
Dr Bawumia added, “The president announced there would be no haircut, all Ghanaians were happy, but when it came we gave haircuts. When you look the government was not paying NABCO anymore, where not paying afforestation, and the caterers were also not being paid.
Also, in most of the regions that the majority of our votes come from we did not develop the place, the Western Region the roads, the Market Circle we were not able to complete it”.
He further asserted that going into the 2024 elections the NPP was not united.
