Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the former vice president and presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 elections has ordered President John Mahama to immediately rein in his security operatives.
According to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, State institutions must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents.
He further warned John Mahama that Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear.
In a social media post on X, Dr Bawumia wrote, “Last night, following the attempted raid by some alleged officials of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), I visited Hon. Rev. John @NtimFordjour, MP for Assin South and Ranking Member of Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior.
Rev. Fordjour was in high spirits and undaunted. I urge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution.
I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E John Dramani Mahama, to immediately rein in his security operatives. State institutions must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents. Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear. Our democracy is hinged on due process and rule of law”, his statement added.
His comments come on the back of NIB storming the home of Ntim Fordjour to arrest him with members of the Minority quickly mobilizing to the MP’s residence, insisting that the NIB operatives lacked a warrant and legal basis for the arrest.
The Minority in Parliament described the attempted arrest as an illegal and politically motivated attempt by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
The incident took place at the MP’s Spintex residence in Accra on Wednesday, April 9, following allegations he made concerning two suspicious aircraft that allegedly landed at Kotoka International Airport, carrying drugs and large sums of cash.
Although government officials have dismissed the claims as unfounded, the attempted arrest has sparked fears of a crackdown on opposition voices raising concerns about national issues.
Addressing the media, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned the move, labelling it an act of harassment and a clear attempt to intimidate a sitting lawmaker.
He warned that such actions undermine parliamentary oversight and democratic accountability.
He further noted that no formal charges or documentation were provided during the incident, reinforcing suspicions of political interference.
He assured Ghanaians of the Minority’s unwavering stance in defending the principles of democracy and called on the public to remain alert and support efforts to uphold the rule of law.
