Bryan Acheampong the member of Parliament for Abetifi has stated he is ready to reconstruct the burnt Adum market in 12 months pending approval from the Asantehene and city authorities.
The two-story building housing several shops in the central business district of Adum in Kumasi caught fire some months ago.
The fire happened at the popular Blue Light arena, close to Hello FM.
Reports suggest the fire started around 6 am and spread rapidly as fire officers made attempts to contain the blaze.
The former Food and Agriculture Minister accompanied by some Members of Parliament also donated GH¢300,000 to the affected traders.
Speaking to the affected traders, Bryan Acheampong stated, “I am waiting for Otumfuo to arrive from abroad. I would meet with him to share my proposal with him.
“Once Otumfuo and city authorities approve it, I will rebuild the shops, and complete it in a year for affected traders to move in and continue their trading activity”
“Coming here today, you will see that they have started building, but the structures are very weak, yet they are supporting it with block work. But these are not stable. I want to engage the Otumfuo, who is out of the country, and if he permits, also the assembly permits, we want to rebuild this structure for them in 12 months”, he added.
Meanwhile, Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi has told Adum market fire victims not to waste money and cement in reconstructing the market.
According to the Kumasi Mayor, he would demolish the structure without proper structural assessment.
He noted concern for public safety, mentioning concerns over the structural integrity of the affected buildings.
Additionally, Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister revealed some weeks ago that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the landlord, is currently out of the country, so construction work cannot start.
“Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the landlord, is currently out of the country. Therefore, the rebuilding of the market cannot start now. However, the government will take the necessary steps when he returns in the interest of the affected traders,” he revealed.
