The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has responded to allegations linking him to illegal mining (galamsey) activities.
Chairman Wontumi boldly claimed he is not involved in galamsey and will never do galamsey.
He boldly claimed the Lands Minister was just lying against him as he has a legitimate license for his mining operation.
Speaking during the New Patriotic Party “Thank You Tour”, Chairman Wontumi stated, “When they (NDC) came they were talking about galamsey now they want to frame me with galamsey, which is not the truth.
Chairman Wontumi I don’t do galamsey, Chairman Wontumi I will never do galamsey, the places you are Chairman Wontumi I’m I the one doing mining there? The minister is just lying, I have a legitimate license that is a lease”, he boldly stated.
His comment came on back of the the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah revealing that he has authorized the Minerals Commission to take steps to revoke the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd with immediate effect.
The Lands Minister in a press conference stated, “Some interviews conducted with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.
“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (17th April 2025) an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining”.
