Running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 presidential election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has disclosed he has no plans to represent the party in the 2028 presidential race.
According to him, his current focus is on helping the party rebuild and strengthening its unity.
NAPO made this revelation at the sidelines of the party’s emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council meetings held today, April 16, at Alisa Hotel.
NAPO reaffirmed his commitment to fostering unity within the party as a key focus ahead of the December polls.
“My immediate interest now is to get a united party for a flagbearer to be eventually crowned,” he said.
Addressing speculation about a possible presidential bid in 2028, Dr. Prempeh dismissed the rumours.
“No, I am not running in 2028,” he stated firmly.
Matthew Opoku Prempeh became one of the frontrunners for the NPP’s running mate with the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia engaging President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, June 25 2024 at the Jubilee House.
His name was submitted for consideration during the said meeting which was approved by the President.
A final decision was eventually taken by the party’s national council at Alisa Hotel on Thursday, July 4, 2024 where he was named running mate.
Although some in the party were happy about his nominations, claiming it would lead to a consolidation of Ashanti votes, some claimed he was the wrong choice, insisting his pride and arrogance would get in the way of the party’s success at the polls.
